An EU Member State hosting the Russian navy and air force right next to the UK bases.

Russia does seem to be driving wedges into all the weak points of the EU.  The UK bases will be of very limited value now.  The smart response by UK would be to announce their relocation to Poland or the Baltics.

I guess that Cyprus hasn't heard about the Naval Base in Krym and all the fun there..  ::)
In Russia we only had two TV channels. Channel One was propaganda. Channel Two consisted of a KGB officer telling you: Turn back at once to Channel One. Yakov Smirnoff

Doubt they would do that.  The Mediterranean is a far warmer posting  :D

But as for wedges into weak points, that's the way.  Attack the strategies, then the alliances, and lastly the soldiers, as some old Chinese chap wrote many, many centuries ago.  As there is no apparent strategy to attack - go directly to the alliances.

Puts the Kremlin military cat amongst the southern Mediterranean pigeons doves.

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has dismissed claims that Cyprus is preparing to allow Russian permission to build bases on the island.

Kasoulides, who is attending the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, said, "There has never been and, indeed, there is no question of Russian air or naval military bases on Cyprus soil. A request has not been made from Russia on the subject of bases."

Have I missed the "build" part? I only read "visit" as in docking, as in Shore Leave....
Peace is the failure of the military to convince the government that it can and should kick its enemies ass.

It doesn't bode well for the extension of sanctions between March and June though.  Those Crimea related will probably continue (Cyrpus does have its own on-going annexation issue after all) - but others?  Sends a message that Cyprus is not going to stay on board.

Going to very complex. Russia is poop disturbing in the EU. Cyprus like Greece are still vulnerable to an exit for their lack austerity and very naughty stuff.

Again, Russia is going after the west and Ukraine is multilevel You have leaders like Hollande who can only count to 21 if he is naked. Ok 20 1/2.
This is a chess match.
I think the oil price drop is something that the Kremlin-based midget did not see and he is trying to adjust. You will see more push to destablizing of Ukraine via other tactics.
