Brown sugar or molasses
« on: 19:33 27-Nov-2015 »
I've been trying for days to find brown sugar to make an apple pie for Thanksgiving. As its already passed, I failed. Then I learned how to make it, very easy - 1 cup of sugar and 1 tbsp of molasses. My wife has never heard of molasses so I'm guessing that will be hard to find as well. Silpo his "brown sugar" but that's exactly what it is, regular sugar ala natural. Expensive too. Alla has never had apple pie, hard to believe. She hasn't had pumpkin pie either, but that's beyond my ability. Any idea if either are available here?

Molasses is hard to find here, are you in Odessa? If so I have found one store that "occasionally" carries it.  Pumpkin pie is very easy here in Ukraine.  I've developed a recipe that works great with the ingredients readily available.  If you would like a recipe just send me a pm and I'll help you out.  It's not difficult at all.

Yes, I'm in Odessa and I'd love the pumpkin pie recipe. I'll try and whip that up for Christmas  :)

Molasses in Odessa.

Where?

I've looked for "real" brown sugar as well, no luck.

I've always wondered about that stuff.

In Russia we only had two TV channels. Channel One was propaganda. Channel Two consisted of a KGB officer telling you: Turn back at once to Channel One. Yakov Smirnoff

Once you find molasses you can make your own brown sugar. 1 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon of molasses. Stir. Done. I still haven't made it to Santim, been busy trying to fix my internet connection. Router issues and laptop charger. Both got taken out by a power surge.

You'll need that for tasty flan!

My brother sent me a bottle. I made an awesome apple pie...finally  :)
My next trick was vanilla extract. I found a guy selling vanilla beans at the local market. One of the guys selling spices. He pulled it out of his pocket in a plastic baggie, like it was contraband. The cool thing about making the extract is its two ingredients. 3 vanilla beans (split up the middle, leave an inch at the bottom) and vodka. Yep, you read that right. I had to buy an airtight jar (cheap) to store it in. Put the beans in the jar and cover them with vodka. Store for two months in a cool, dark spot. Done. You can even top it off when it gets low, so it lasts for years. Oh, also shake it up every once in a while.

On the brown sugar...made with molasses is awesome. Soft and sweet. When the recipe calls for a "cup of packed brown sugar," make two. I just double what they call for if packed.

What is "real" brown sugar? I just know brown sugar coming mostly from Mauritius. Its sold at Metro in any quantity you like. .. But is there a metro in Odessa? I don't know ... https://www.metro.ua/
