~~ BEER ~~
« on: 02:12 05-Aug-2008 »

OK, since August is upon us, when better to discuss our favorite beverage, beer?

You know, Beer - The official breakfast drink of Summer.   ;D   ;D

Here's some rules, in case you're the kind who needs rules.  You know who you are.

   •   It should be a beer you can actually buy in Ukraine.  Even if only in one place.
   •   Foreign, Ukraine, or local.  It doesn't matter.
   •   Where did you find it?  Just because it's sold in Lviv doesn't mean you can buy it in Kiev.  Go figure.
   •   If you found it in Kiev, (or elsewhere) where?  Kiev's a big place.
   •   Why do you like it?  Or worse, why don't you like it?

Not a big beer drinker........BUT.......Guinness, Murphy's and I have found the odd place in Odessa with Cafferies........and no I don't frequent the Irish bars in Odessa - too many Expats/wanna be Expats and wife seekers in those places  :o

Can be found in many restaurants and the local supermarkets here.

Great to drink and cook with  ;)

Still haven't found anywhere that sells a pint of "Frog" but I think that is a local Hampshire brew  :'(

Note:  as an American, it's easy to be impressed with beers here in Ukraine, especially when you compare them to the big-name beers in the USA.  Having said that, here are my faves.

Locally brewed "big beer".  Chernihivske svetlo.  Solid taste, and consistant.

Import beer.  Staropramen.  Either by the case at Metro, or on tap around Kiev.

Specialty beer  ???  OK, some would call this a "beer drink", not a real beer.  But I like the Obolon Lemon and Beer mix.  For those times you want something lighter and more refreshing.  IMHO.

In Kiev, I have noticed that Auchan has a much different variety of beers than Metro has.  I may need to check it out closer some time...

Sorry, but Staropramen (the least good Czech beer) is not an import but a licensee-brew not even up to the rather low quality of the original.
Being a Dane, having lived in Czechia for years, and visited Bavaria many times, I'm sort of a beer expert - and the only decent local, Ukrainian beer (in shops) is Lvivsky 1715. Of course the best draft beer is 'Podilsky', dark and soft - but I only know of one, fish-stinking  :-X place where you can have it...

Top 3 among ukrainian beers:

-Lvivske premium
-Slavutych premium
-Obolon premium

Top 3 foreign beers bottled in Ukraine:

-Tuborg green
-staropramen
-tuborg gold

Top 3 foreign beers bottled originally:

-Velkopopovicky Kozel Cerny (dark beer)
-Guiness
-Zywiec (polish beer - not the best one, but I'm polish...:))))

All beers available in Megamarket or Kraina (Magellan); almost all - in Metro.

Mattsh:
- I agree american beers are...you know:)
-I cannot agree Chernihovske is tasty.Damn, in my opinion it's the worst among full light beers here!De gustibus...

Cheers!

I favor the Slavutych but only when it is COLD!  Hardly ever drink beer here, better to wait until I take a trip over to Prague although maybe Vienna is coming towards the top of my travel list in the next few months.

I like the darkie "bila nich"

I agree. Bila Nich (White Night) poors with an off-white head. It fades quite quickly to a thin lacing that sticks to the glass while drinking.

Being unfiltered, this dark beer is very cloudy with some sediment.

Nose is quite flowery with nice hop aroma, perfume and quite a bit of sweetness.

Taste is not as full-bodied that the color suggests, sweet caramel and molasses with hints of herbs with a flowery hop aroma with little bitterness.

RJM, good comment!  Packman has obviuosly found the brew of his life with such an elequent discription of it. A real connessour with such a full description. More depth then the wine connessours on a $100.00 bottle of wine.  I may have to try it next time.

I wish I could really take credit for the description, but alas it wasn't me!  The description sounded like a women...afterall don't you all love a hoppy aroma from a women? :D

'Met' a new (to me) - it's called 'Brovar'. They produce a range of very good, live beer, my favorite is the 'Mykulyn'.  ::)
