OK - let's liven the site up
« on: 07:40 07-Sep-2007 »

First, I am only offering this up as a topic to spark some discussion and understanding.  The fact is that, individually, we (expats) will probably not be able to change our respective governments' structure, policies or strategies.  However, I have always believed that information, knowledge, discourse, orderly debate and understanding of other's positions is a good thing.  So, lets venture down the road of building some knowledge and understanding of each other's point of view.  Preferably without personal attacks, bile or anger. So....

Have you ever wondered how that crazy American system is supposed to work?  I ran across this film clip from one of the American presidential candidates this morning.  It is non-partisan and struck me as a good, concise summary of a key part of the American governmental structure.  I have noticed that many people in Europe and elsewhere seem to question why the American system has these layers of law and government; this may give you some insight and lead you to more questions about roles.  Anyone that has similar links helping to explain the intricacies of government in their countries, why don't you post them here and if discussion arises, put it into another thread so this one stays mostly informational?  We can refer to it as needed.  Admin? Are we about ready for a political forum?

I repeat, any of you with informational links as to how government works (or maybe doesn't work) in your countries, I would be interested in learning more.

Well, fine, Ed.
However, your link only partrly functions for me (video frozen) - is the written text the same as what the video says?

Click the arrow in the middle of the picture (not the normal control button on bottom edge) and it should run - should be fine on a high-speed connection.  Runs from my house.

The text is different from the video.  The text is more of an educational text explanation of the federalist system and provides more details than his overview.

Cool as long as people understand that Socialism, Dicatorships, Communists, Monarchists, etc. are welcome to post.  I support access to knowledge of almost all types.  Heck, I would be interested in someone explaining how some leaders stay in power and how government effectively works in a variety of situation.

It's time to prove how wrong was Francis Fukuyama in his book "The End of History..." :-)

There are some good things about the American system (mine I guess since I'm American) but I do think it needs a bit of updating.

Electoral College:  There is no justifiable reason why the country shouldn't directly elect a president.  Rural white folks out in Wyoming's vote shouldn't count more than a voter of any color in NY or California.

Its possible to argue only very seldom does one parties platform get implemented.  Since there are so many protections, super-majorities needed to pass any legislation, things get bottled up and don't move forward as fast as the modern world moves.

Agree with Pack. :)
However, what I always find difficult to grasp about the US system is, how can you have a democracy without parlamentarism?
Obviously, you could ask me as a Dane, how can you have democracy in a monarchy?  :-\
I guess we need to align our definitions of 'democracy' (because the meaning of that word is not just a translation from the org. Greek word).

At the risk of sending fellow forum members into a deep slumber, I offer the UK system of parliament -

http://www.parliament.uk/works/index.cfm

The most relevant link would perhaps be that covering Government and Opposition found in -

http://www.parliament.uk/works/pagovopp.cfm

and how Parliament works on -

http://www.parliament.uk/about/how.cfm

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
