Title: Kharkov has the 14th largest Market in the World but I hated it.
Post by: Danno99 on 02:20 22-Sep-2018
So who designed that big-ass market in Kharkov? It was like a maze.... except mazes are on a grid pattern of sorts.

That damn market had me so lost with all those angles and slight turns, it was all I could do to untangle myself with Google maps.
When I go to these type places I like to work it in grids so I am not wasting time going down the same row more than once. Not hardly possible there.
Somehow I ended up in an area that sold bulk buttons and zippers and crap like that.

The best one I have been to yet is the one in the north of Kiev, across the river somewhere.

Thoughts?

And then there's the fact that you see even more of the same stuff in more stalls.

Kinda like the cheese here.  120 varieties and it all tastes the same.  :D

Most of the customers are buying in bulk to then slap 20-40% on and sell in their small town market. For the public it is quite easy to find your way around, theres the big signs over head showing what department you are in. If your used to small  town Ukrainian markets then it all makes sense  ::)

For clothes its great but for things in the house it is very poor. When I did a rennovation I went there once for various components and it just is not comparable to the value stuff from Epicenter which is only about 15% more expensive.

What sort of things were you buying?

Well, I have noticed three distinct flavors, if you don't count cheese with various olive or pepper bits.  There is fresh cheese, which I quite like.  There is medium older cheese, which is a bit drier and still edible, and then there is ultra hard and dry, which has too strong a taste for me.  They do not use annatto or oleoresin very much, which is the stuff Americans put in cheddar that makes it orange and makes sharper, aged cheese a bit milder.  Consider, though that when Russia cut back on Ukrainian food imports, it was a bit of a cheesy catastrophe for them.  Russian cheesemakers only knew how to make cheese that crumbled like blue cheese.  I think they have upped their game by now, maybe.

Most Ukrainian cheese is poop....except two!

The fresh daily "Farmers Cheese" I use it in place of ricotta for baking. Excellent!
There is a guy in Kharkov who makes cream cheese, as good as Philly and much much cheaper, comes in tubs, I use it to make New York Cheesecakes.
